Tunnel Boring Machine for “Big Dig”
The tunnel boring machine that played a critical role in Boston’s famous “Big Dig” highway project was delivered to the Port of Coeymans by barge to be rehabilitated at the facility. The machine was dismantled and each piece was sandblasted and painted in temporary structures that were built at the Port facility to accommodate the project. Once the pieces were restored, the 125 ton machine was rebuilt. More than 5,500 cubic meters of material were loaded onto a vessel in a two-day time frame. Once loaded, the vessel departed for Russia where the machine was to be utilized again.
