New York's Quadricentennial Celebration

Friday, June 12 2009

Coeymans, N.Y. (June 12, 2009) – The Port of Coeymans Marine Terminal, along with tenants Fort Miller Co., Inc. and R.K. Freedman & Son Inc., sponsored a Quadricentennial Celebration at the Port of Coeymans on Friday, June 12.  Approximately 500 people attended the event, which lasted until midnight.

Vessels traveled up the Hudson River days before the celebration, and docked around 4 p.m. on Friday and stayed until the following morning. The flotilla included ships Half Moon, Mystic Onrust, Clearwater, and Cleveland.

The District and Town of Coeymans provided a school bus that transported community members to the port, giving them the opportunity to see the magnificent ships and take part in the festivities.

Coeymans Fire Company, together with Ladies Auxiliary, catered the event that included an array of salads, beverages, and the main course: an old-fashioned pig roast.

The fire department brought one of their fire trucks adorned with a large American flag on top. They also set up a tent to sell burgers and hot dogs, which presented an opportunity for them to raise funds.

Half Moon shot off its cannons, and a fireboat spewed bursts of water out of its pipes to commemorate the occasion.

Kids were given helium-filled balloons, glow sticks, and little American flags to wave.

Alonzo Fireworks, based out of Mechanicville, NY, put on the awe-inspiring fireworks display.

About the Quadricentennial:

New Year’s Day 2009 marked the start of New York’s Quadricentennial Celebration commemorating 400 years of history on the Hudson River, New York Harbor, and Lake Champlain.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Captain Henry Hudson, who led (for the Dutch) the first European expedition to sail up the river that now bears his name. It is also the 400th anniversary of the voyage of Samuel De Champlain, and his discovery of what is now his namesake lake.

From the Big Apple to the Canadian Border, communities are preparing events and projects to highlight New York’s rich history of exploration and discovery.
